When to go in Mexico?
From November to April, the dry season reigns: a luminous Yucatán, Mexico City at 25 °C, a limpid Caribbean sea. May heats up hard before the summer rains, brief and tropical, which green everything without stopping travel. September concentrates the cyclone risk on the coasts; November, between Día de los Muertos and the returning mildness, is a golden month.

Quick guide
Understanding Mexico
Getting around
The ADO buses, comfortable and punctual, criss-cross the country; domestic flights (Viva, Volaris) swallow the big distances. In the Yucatán, renting a car is easy and the roads are excellent.
Money
The peso (MXN). Withdraw at bank ATMs, pay in pesos rather than dollars, and keep cash for markets and cenotes. A 10 to 15% tip at restaurants.
Language
Spanish, and 68 indigenous languages. English gets you by in the tourist areas, but a few words of Spanish transform every exchange, Mexicans are very touched by it.
Useful apps
Uber and DiDi in the big cities (never hail a taxi in Mexico City), the ADO app for the buses, and Google Translate in offline mode for the markets.
Accommodation
Colonial haciendas, Oaxaca casonas, cabañas with your feet in the sand in Tulum or Bacalar: charm is everywhere and the value excellent outside the Riviera Maya.
Etiquette
Take the time to greet ("buenos días") before any request, taste what you are offered, chilli included, and ask before photographing in the indigenous villages.

The pyramid of Kukulcán, a perfect stone calendar where the feathered serpent descends at the equinoxes. A wonder of the world, best visited from 8 am.
Teotihuacan
Mexico City
The city of the gods and its pyramids of the Sun and the Moon, aligned on the Avenue of the Dead. By hot-air balloon at dawn, the thrill is total.
Cenotes of the Yucatán
Valladolid
Thousands of turquoise water wells opened in the limestone jungle, sacred to the Maya. Every swim is a baptism.
Palenque
Chiapas
Maya temples emerging from the forest mist, howler monkeys as the soundtrack: the most bewitching site of the Maya world.
