Downtown, from 9/11 to Wall Street

Morning

One World Observatory, 9/11 memorial and museum

The car is returned on arrival: the eight days in New York are done by subway, far cheaper than parking in Manhattan. Then the One World Trade Center lift rises to the 102nd floor in 47 seconds, projecting 500 years of the skyline's evolution onto its walls. Below, the two pools of the memorial occupy the exact footprint of the towers, the 2,983 names engraved on their parapets, and the museum descends to the foundations.

Afternoon

Wall Street, Trinity Church, Federal Hall and Battery Park

The financial district is walked on foot: Trinity Church, whose spire was the highest point in New York until 1890, Federal Hall where Washington was sworn in as the first president in 1789, Fraunces Tavern (1719) where he bade farewell to his officers, the cobblestones of Stone Street, the Charging Bull of 1989 and finally Battery Park, facing the bay.

Evening

Staten Island Ferry at sunset

Free, every 30 minutes: a 25-minute crossing with the Statue of Liberty to starboard and the skyline lighting up on the way back. The finest view in New York costs nothing.

Good to know

The car is returned as soon as you arrive: a parking space in Manhattan costs more than a hotel night. The 9/11 museum requires a timed ticket, the outdoor memorial is open and free. The Staten Island Ferry leaves from the Whitehall terminal, with no ticket and no booking.

Country quick guide and logistics

The essentials of the country, scannable in ten seconds.

Weather and when to go

  • Spring and autumn are ideal. Summer is hot and humid, with air-conditioned trains but stifling platforms.
  • Bring good shoes: you easily walk 15 km a day, and the Washington Mall is no longer there to offer breaks in the car.
  • The Coney Island rides run only between April and October: every day in summer, weekends only in spring and autumn.

Transport and permits

  • The car is returned as soon as you arrive: a parking space in Manhattan costs more than a hotel night.
  • The subway runs around the clock. OMNY payment is made directly with a contactless bank card, with an automatic seven-day cap.
  • Lines 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 link Harlem to Downtown in 25 minutes; Coney Island is an hour away on the D, F, N and Q lines.
  • Departure from JFK by AirTrain from Jamaica or Howard Beach, or on foot from the TWA Hotel, linked to Terminal 5 by a walkway.

Formalities and safety

  • A valid biometric passport and a current ESTA.
  • The whole trip comes to 88 days, the Canadian days included: the 90-day ESTA limit is close, and any flight delay puts it under strain.
  • The crown of the Statue of Liberty has a very small daily quota: it is the tightest booking of the trip, to be taken six months ahead on statuecitycruises.com.
  • The Tenement Museum is visited on a guided tour only, to be booked several days ahead.

Budget and meals

  • New York is the most expensive city of the route: $15 to $25 at lunchtime (pizza by the slice, delis, food trucks), $35 to $60 in the evening.
  • Sales tax of 8.875% is added to the displayed prices and the tip is 18 to 20%.
  • An unlimited 7-day subway pass covers almost the whole stage.
  • Many museums run pay-what-you-wish for residents only: check the visitor rates. A single Met ticket gives access to the museum three days running.

Email contact@etaperia.com within 12 months of your purchase. If a hotel in the itinerary is closed or can no longer be found, or a place to visit has closed permanently, the itinerary is corrected in your customer account within 7 days, or you are refunded in full. A hotel fully booked on your dates, a seasonal closure or a change in opening hours or prices is not covered.
