Frank Lloyd Wright and Niagara Falls

Morning

Darwin D. Martin House, Delaware Park and Pierce-Arrow Museum

A masterpiece by Frank Lloyd Wright (1905), the Prairie School complex of six buildings linked by a 30-metre pergola has been entirely restored. Next door, Delaware Park, a great Olmsted landscape park (1868). Then the Pierce-Arrow Museum, devoted to the luxury cars built in Buffalo, with the filling station built from Wright's 1927 plans.

Afternoon

Cave of the Winds and Maid of the Mist

Thirty minutes from Buffalo, on the American side: down by lift to the foot of the Bridal Veil Falls, then wooden walkways to the Hurricane Deck, a few metres from the curtain of water (poncho and sandals provided). Then the legendary boat of 1846 that pushes into the horseshoe of the Horseshoe Falls, in the middle of the spray.

Evening

Niagara Falls State Park, illumination of the falls

The oldest state park in the country (1885, designed by Olmsted); every evening the falls are lit in colour, with views from Prospect Point and Luna Island.

Good to know

Cave of the Winds and Maid of the Mist only run from late April to late October. The Niagara Falls USA Discovery Pass covers both plus the Niagara Adventure Theater and the Aquarium, cheaper than separate admissions. Poncho provided, but bring a change of clothes: you come out of both soaked.

Weather and when to go

  • Late May to October: some of the roads and accommodation in Acadia only open in May, and New England stays cold before that.
  • The autumn colours reach the White Mountains in early October: it is the finest window of the route, and the most sought-after.
  • Cave of the Winds and Maid of the Mist, at Niagara, only run from late April to late October.

Transport and permits

  • This stage opens the route: the first rental car is picked up in New York (JFK) on day 1 and drives as far as New Orleans on day 35.
  • The crossing into Canada at Niagara must be declared to the rental company, which issues the authorisation to leave the country and the insurance card.
  • Many motorways in the East use electronic tolling with no booth: the rental company's transponder option avoids an administration fee for every crossing.
  • Parking in Boston is expensive and scarce: prefer the garages and the subway for the days in town.

Formalities and safety

  • A valid biometric passport and a current ESTA, obtained before departure at esta.cbp.dhs.gov.
  • Crossing to the Canadian side of Niagara means leaving and re-entering US territory: keep the proof of entry, it counts towards the 90-day ESTA limit.
  • A French driving licence is accepted, an international permit is recommended alongside it.
  • Ticks in New England and the White Mountains: long trousers when hiking and a check in the evening.

Budget and meals

  • Meals: $15 to $25 at lunchtime, $25 to $45 in the evening excluding drinks, an 18 to 20% tip.
  • The annual America the Beautiful pass at $80, to be bought at the first paid entrance of the trip, at Acadia: it pays for itself from the third park of the route.
  • The Niagara Falls USA Discovery Pass covers Cave of the Winds, Maid of the Mist, the Niagara Adventure Theater and the Aquarium, cheaper than separate admissions.
  • Cedar Point, at the end of the stage, is best value with a ticket bought online in advance.

Email contact@etaperia.com within 12 months of your purchase. If a hotel in the itinerary is closed or can no longer be found, or a place to visit has closed permanently, the itinerary is corrected in your customer account within 7 days, or you are refunded in full. A hotel fully booked on your dates, a seasonal closure or a change in opening hours or prices is not covered.
