Ballestas islands and the Paracas Reserve

Boat expedition to the Ballestas islands

Departure from the El Chaco quay for about 2 hours sailing around these islets nicknamed the Peruvian Galápagos: South American sea lions, Humboldt penguins, cormorants and boobies in their thousands on rocky arches sculpted by the Pacific. There is no landing on the islands, protected since 2009.

The famous Candelabra

On the way, the boat passes the Candelabra, a 180-metre geoglyph carved into the dune of a peninsula. Its origin is still debated: Paracas culture, a landmark for navigators or a masonic symbol, the mystery is part of the show.

Afternoon

Paracas National Reserve and the road to Ica

Created in 1975, the reserve protects 335,000 hectares of coastal desert and ocean, where ochre dunes plunge into a turquoise sea. The classics: the Playa Roja with its garnet sand, the Catedral viewpoint and the fishing village of Lagunillas. It is also the cradle of the Paracas culture, master of the finest textiles in pre-Columbian America. Then the road to Ica, about 1 hr 15.

An evening in Ica around pisco, the national spirit born in this valley: a tasting at the restaurant-bar 8 CEPAS, whose name refers to the eight authorised pisco grape varieties.

Good to know

Take the 8 am departure: calmer sea and better light. A windbreaker is advised, the spray soaks the front rows. Port tax and entry fee on top of the ticket.

Country quick guide and logistics

Weather and when to go

  • Three climate worlds: the desert coast under the garúa mist from May to November (never any rain), the Andes in their dry season from May to September, the hot and humid Amazon with less rain from May to October. The May-September window is the best for the whole route.
  • The Inca Trail is closed in February.
  • The route peaks at 5,036 m at Vinicunca (day 22): the gradual climb of the first three weeks acts as natural acclimatisation. Cold nights at altitude.

Transport and permits

  • About 12,300 km in total: 8,400 by road (premium Cruz del Sur or Oltursa buses, private 4x4s, colectivos), 3,200 by air on four domestic flights, 350 by boat and canoe, 300 on foot on the treks.
  • Six nights are spent on sleeper buses on the long legs. In the cities, official taxis or apps only.
  • Night buses only need booking a few days ahead, 2 to 3 days for the northern routes; refuges, mules and local guides are arranged on the spot, the day before.

Formalities and safety

  • No tourist visa for many nationalities: authorisation on arrival for up to 90 days, the 82 days of the route fit within it. Passport valid 6 months after entry, an onward ticket is sometimes requested at boarding.
  • The Inca Trail permit is taken 4 to 6 months ahead (500 people per day) with the final passport number; the Machu Picchu circuits 2 to 3 months ahead on tuboleto.cultura.pe. Everything is checked against your passport: renewing it after booking forces you through modification procedures.
  • No compulsory vaccine. Recommended: universal vaccinations up to date, hepatitis A, typhoid, yellow fever for the Amazon. The route goes above 4,700 m, consult a doctor before departure.

Budget and meals

  • The Peruvian sol (PEN), about 4 soles to 1 euro. Cards accepted in the cities, cash essential in rural areas and on the treks.
  • Five zones of the trip have no reliable ATM: withdraw in Arequipa, Puno, Cusco, Huaraz and Chachapoyas, in small notes.
  • Local set menu 10 to 20 soles, good restaurant 40 to 80 soles, Lima's fine dining above that.

Email contact@etaperia.com within 12 months of your purchase. If a hotel in the itinerary is closed or can no longer be found, or a place to visit has closed permanently, the itinerary is corrected in your customer account within 7 days, or you are refunded in full. A hotel fully booked on your dates, a seasonal closure or a change in opening hours or prices is not covered.
