Country quick guide and logistics

The essentials of the country, scannable in ten seconds.

Weather and when to go

  • Maximum altitude contrast: from 200 m in the Amazon to 4,750 m at the Punta Unión pass within a few days. The acclimatisation day at the Wilcacocha lagoon exists precisely for that.
  • A cold-rated sleeping bag for the Santa Cruz camp nights, well below zero; altitude sunscreen and poles.
  • May to September for the trek; in the Amazon, less rain from May to October, strong repellent and long sleeves at dusk.

Transport and permits

  • Two domestic flights (Cusco-Puerto Maldonado, then Puerto Maldonado-Lima, LATAM or Sky): book early, hold luggage often as an option, almost everything connects through Lima.
  • Motorised canoe to the lodge, transfer included in the Inkaterra stay: a soft bag rather than a suitcase.
  • Night bus Lima-Huaraz in a cama seat (8 to 9 hr, Movil Bus or Cruz del Sur), then the Huaraz-Trujillo night bus at the end of the stage: book ahead, arrive 45 minutes early at the terminal.

Formalities and safety

  • Yellow fever vaccine recommended for Puerto Maldonado; the lodge's water is treated, excursions included and boots lent at the Inkaterra.
  • The Santa Cruz trek is organised over 4 days with a Huaraz agency (akilpohuaraz.com): guide, mules, camps and meals included, book a few weeks ahead.
  • Huascarán national park entry fee for Llanganuco and the trek, in cash; included or not depending on the agency, check when booking.

Budget and meals

  • Chavín de Huántar at the site desk, the national museum is free; a local guide is recommended for the underground galleries.

If a hotel in the itinerary is closed or can no longer be found, or a place to visit has closed permanently, the itinerary is corrected in your customer account within 7 days, or you are refunded in full. A hotel fully booked on your dates, a seasonal closure or a change in opening hours or prices is not covered.
