Waqrapukara and arrival in Cuzco

About 2 hours' walk at 4,300 m lead to Waqrapukara, the "horned fortress": an Inca sanctuary with terraces and double-jamb doorways, clinging to a basalt spur overhanging the Apurímac canyon. The double rock pinnacle that gives it its name and the void below make it one of the most spectacular panoramas in the Cusco region, still largely unknown.

About 3 hours on the road to reach Cuzco (3,400 m), navel of the Inca world and base camp for the next three weeks of the full route.

Weather and when to go

  • The whole stage plays out between 3,400 m and 5,036 m (Vinicunca), the highest of the trip: walk slowly, keep the days short, drink coca tea.
  • Violent glare on the Titicaca, even under cloud: factor 50 cream, hat and sunglasses for the boat day to Taquile.
  • Snow is possible on the coloured mountains: check the weather the day before. Vinicunca is earned before dawn, the quieter Palccoyo can be visited at any hour.

Transport and permits

  • Private 4x4 with driver for the high Puno-Cusco road: Q'eswachaka, Raqchi and Checacupe are not served by bus.
  • Puno-Llachón by combi from the terminal zonal (about 2 hr) or a transfer arranged by the host family; Taquile by community boat from Llachón.
  • Vinicunca and Palccoyo by agency vehicle, booked the day before; Waqrapukara has no regular line, vehicle then 2 to 3 hours' walk.

Formalities and safety

  • Homestay nights in Llachón and Checacupe: simple comfort, blankets provided, cash payment only. Bring a headlamp.
  • A small community entry fee on arrival on Taquile; textiles are bought directly from the cooperative on the square.
  • Taquile, Sillustani, Cutimbo, Raqchi, Q'eswachaka, Palccoyo, Vinicunca and Waqrapukara are paid separately, in cash (about 5 to 25 soles each).

Budget and meals

  • Withdraw in Puno for the whole stage: no safe ATM between Puno and Cusco on this route.
  • Entry fees, meals and community accommodation are settled in cash.
  • Casa de Primo in Llachón: about 25 to 30 US$ a night, double room with lake view, staying with the family.

Email contact@etaperia.com within 12 months of your purchase. If a hotel in the itinerary is closed or can no longer be found, or a place to visit has closed permanently, the itinerary is corrected in your customer account within 7 days, or you are refunded in full. A hotel fully booked on your dates, a seasonal closure or a change in opening hours or prices is not covered.
