Country quick guide and logistics

Weather and when to go

  • Yellow fever vaccine recommended for Iquitos, antimalarials to discuss with a doctor, strong repellent and long sleeves morning and evening.
  • May to October, the least rainy window in the Amazon; humid heat all year on the Tahuayo.
  • No shade at Caral: hat and water for the visit.

Transport and permits

  • Two domestic flights (Chiclayo-Lima then Lima-Iquitos, LATAM or Sky): Iquitos is not connected by any road. For the international return flight, check in 3 hr before take-off.
  • Speedboat on the Amazon then the Tahuayo, transfers handled by Amazonia Expeditions; canoe and dugout with the private guide in the reserve, boots and ponchos lent.
  • Caral about 3 hr from Lima on the Panamericana Norte, by private vehicle or organised excursion, booked the day before.

Formalities and safety

  • The eight Amazon days form a single Amazonia Expeditions programme, the Amazonia Classic Adventure, booked on perujungle.com several months ahead in high season: transfers, full board, private naturalist guide and every outing included.
  • The Casa de Aliaga is visited by appointment only: it is a private residence, still inhabited; arrange it in advance.
  • Guided visit compulsory at Caral, with the site's guides (Spanish or English), ticket at the desk.

Budget and meals

  • A soft bag for the lodge, the suitcase stays in storage at the BTH in Lima; a dry bag for the canoe outings and the camera.
  • Electricity a few hours a day and no wifi at the Amazon Research Center: warn your relatives.
  • Last purchases at the Miraflores Indian market and in Barranco; pisco travels in the hold, well wrapped.

What if a hotel or a place in the itinerary has closed?

Email contact@etaperia.com within 12 months of your purchase. If a hotel in the itinerary is closed or can no longer be found, or a place to visit has closed permanently, the itinerary is corrected in your customer account within 7 days, or you are refunded in full. A hotel fully booked on your dates, a seasonal closure or a change in opening hours or prices is not covered.
