Day 85
The Tijuca forest and the Corcovado
Morning
Tijuca National Park
Thirty-nine square kilometres of Atlantic Forest in the middle of the city, and above all a forest replanted by hand: in the 19th century, coffee plantations had stripped the massif and dried up Rio's springs. From 1861, Pedro II had around a hundred thousand trees replanted, which makes it the largest reforested urban forest in the world.
Vista Chinesa and the Taunay Waterfall
The Chinese pavilion of 1903, at 380 metres, recalls the Chinese workers who came to grow tea in the massif; the view plunges down over the Lagoa, Ipanema and Sugarloaf Mountain. The Taunay Waterfall, at the park entrance, is the one painted by Félix-Émile Taunay.
Climbing the Pico da Tijuca
The highest point in the park, 1,021 metres, reached by a trail of about three kilometres from the Largo do Bom Retiro, with a final flight of steps cut into the rock in 1920. From the summit, the panorama takes in the full circle: the bay, the city, the Serra do Mar and the ocean. Two to three hours there and back.
Afternoon
Christ the Redeemer
Thirty-eight metres with its pedestal, on top of the Corcovado at 710 metres: inaugurated in 1931, the monument was designed by Heitor da Silva Costa, sculpted by the Frenchman Paul Landowski and clad in soapstone by women workers who glued the pieces on one by one. The 1884 rack railway climbs to it through the forest in twenty minutes, which is the finest way to get there.
Parque Lage
At the foot of the massif, a 1920s mansion around a courtyard with a pool and colonnades, with the Corcovado appearing just above the roof. The park, partly returned to forest, is home to the school of visual arts and a café in the courtyard. Free entry.
Good to know
Tickets for the Corcovado train are booked online by time slot and are often sold out several days ahead in high season: buy yours as soon as your dates are fixed. Go up in clear weather, as the statue disappears into the clouds without warning: check the summit webcams that very morning and keep the flexibility to swap with another day.
