Day 30
The Monastery and the Royal Tombs
Morning
Ad-Deir Trail, the Monastery
About 800 steps cut into the rock lead to the largest facade in Petra: 45 metres wide, a colossal urn on top, a single hall that served as a temple and then as a Christian chapel, hence its name. Further on, the viewpoints of the End of the World and the Top of the World look out over Wadi Araba and, on clear days, as far as the mountains of Israel.
Afternoon
Royal Tombs and Al-Khubtha Trail
Lined up on the flank of Jabal al-Khubtha, the four great tombs are visited one after the other: the Urn Tomb, turned into a Byzantine cathedral in 447, the Silk Tomb with its multicoloured sandstone veins, the Corinthian Tomb and the Palace Tomb, the widest of them all.
Good to know
Ad-Deir is reached by about 800 steps, an hour's climb: set off before 9 am to stay in the shade. The Al-Khubtha trail, similar in effort, gives the view straight down onto the Khazneh, finest in the late afternoon.
