Arrival in Busan by way of the temples

Morning

Haedong Yonggungsa

A rare temple built level with the waves, Haedong Yonggungsa clings to the rocks of the north-east coast. Founded in the 14th century and dedicated to the goddess Gwaneum, it is reached down a stairway of 108 steps to pavilions lashed by the spray: one of the most photographed sites in Korea, magical at sunrise.

Beomeosa and Geumjeongsanseong

Beomeosa, a great mountain temple founded in 678 on the flank of Mount Geumjeong, is one of the most important in the region. The ramparts of Geumjeongsanseong, the longest mountain fortress in Korea, offer fine panoramic walks.

Samgwangsa temple

A modern temple known for its gigantic lantern festival around Vesak (Buddha's birthday), when tens of thousands of coloured lanterns light up the site at nightfall.

Country quick guide and logistics

The essentials of the country, scannable in ten seconds.

Weather and when to go

  • The southern climate is milder than Seoul's; summer can be humid with a typhoon risk, keep an eye on the marine forecast.
  • The Jinhae cherry trees only bloom for about ten days, around late March and early April: dates to confirm each year, the travel book plans an out-of-bloom variant.
  • Four distinct seasons. Hot, humid summer, with the monsoon in July.

Transport and permits

  • Busan has an excellent metro for the city. For the far south (Geoje, Tongyeong, Namhae) and the capes, a car is strongly recommended.
  • The boat trips (Haegeumgang, Oedo, Somaemuldo) depend on the weather and the tide: check the timetables the day before and book in high season.
  • Google Maps is restricted in Korea: install Naver Map or KakaoMap, and Papago for translation.

Formalities and safety

  • Passport valid beyond the length of the stay. Short tourist stays visa-free for up to 90 days for many nationalities.
  • K-ETA electronic authorisation required in principle, but several countries, France among them, benefit from a temporary exemption that keeps being extended: check your status on k-eta.go.kr before departure.
  • Pack a light jumper at sea, even in summer, for the boat tours.
  • No compulsory vaccine; up-to-date routine vaccinations recommended (DTP, hepatitis A and B).
  • One of the safest countries in the world. Type C/F power sockets, 220 V.

Budget and meals

  • Currency: South Korean won (KRW). Bank cards accepted almost everywhere; a little cash remains useful at the markets.
  • Street food: €3 to €8. Simple restaurant: €8 to €15.
  • To try: dwaeji-gukbap (pork soup) and the seafood of Busan, Chungmu kimbap and the kkulppang of Tongyeong.
