Daereungwon and Cheonmachong

This park gathers immense tumuli, the tombs of the Silla kings, shaped like green hills. One of them, Cheonmachong ("tomb of the heavenly horse"), can be visited from the inside and yielded a famous gold crown and a painting on birch bark.

Gyerim forest and Cheomseongdae

The sacred forest of Gyerim is tied to the founding legend of the royal Kim clan. Right beside it, Cheomseongdae, a 7th-century stone tower, is considered the oldest surviving astronomical observatory in East Asia.

Afternoon

Woljeonggyo and the Gyochon hanok village

The covered bridge of Woljeonggyo, lavishly rebuilt, spans the Namcheon river. Next to it, the Gyochon hanok village preserves the home of the wealthy Choi family and its Gyeongju beopju liquor distillery.

Evening

Donggung Palace & Wolji Pond

The former palace of the crown prince and its pleasure pond, where the rebuilt pavilions are mirrored in the water. Lit up at nightfall, it is one of the finest sights in Gyeongju.

Country quick guide and logistics

Weather and when to go

  • Gyeongju is superb in spring, for its cherry blossoms, and in autumn. Book early in high season.
  • Four distinct seasons. Hot, humid summer, with the monsoon in July. Cold, dry winter.

Transport and permits

  • Gyeongju is easily covered by car or by bike: the sites cluster around the historic centre and lake Bomun.
  • Pohang and Ulsan are connected to the KTX. A car remains handy for the capes and coastal villages.
  • Google Maps is restricted in Korea: install Naver Map or KakaoMap, and Papago for translation.

Formalities and safety

  • Passport valid beyond the length of the stay. Short tourist stays visa-free for up to 90 days for many nationalities.
  • K-ETA electronic authorisation required in principle, but several countries, France among them, benefit from a temporary exemption that keeps being extended: check your status on k-eta.go.kr before departure.
  • The Mount Namsan hike takes a full day, good shoes and water.
  • No compulsory vaccine; up-to-date routine vaccinations recommended (DTP, hepatitis A and B). Tap water is drinkable.
  • One of the safest countries in the world. Type C/F power sockets, 220 V.

Budget and meals

  • Currency: South Korean won (KRW). Bank cards accepted almost everywhere; a little cash remains useful at the markets.
  • Street food: €3 to €8. Simple restaurant: €8 to €15.
  • Check the evening opening hours: Donggung, Wolji and Woljeonggyo lit up are among the finest night views in the country.
