Yeosu, the city at the water's edge

Morning

Dolsan cable car and Jinnamgwan

Yeosu was the host city of Expo 2012. The cable car, one of the few in the world to fly over the sea, links Dolsan to the centre with glass cabins. The Jinnamgwan, an immense wooden pavilion from the Joseon naval headquarters, is a national treasure.

Afternoon

Odongdo island and Dolsan bridge

Linked by a causeway walkway, the little island of Odongdo is covered in camellias and bamboo, with a panoramic lighthouse. Dolsan bridge, lit up in the evening, spans the strait.

Evening

Big-O Show

On the Expo site, the Big-O gives an evening sound and light show with water jets, projections and flames on an immense ring set on the sea.

Country quick guide and logistics

Weather and when to go

  • Spring (Ssanggyesa cherry blossoms, new tea) and autumn (Jirisan foliage, the golden reeds of Suncheon) are magnificent.
  • The Deokjin lotuses and the tea fields are superb in summer.
  • Four distinct seasons. Hot, humid summer, with the monsoon in July.

Transport and permits

  • Jeolla, rural and mountainous, is ideally covered by car. Yeosu, Gwangju, Jeonju and Mokpo are connected to the KTX.
  • Ferries are essential for the Sinan and Dadohaehaesang islands: Hongdo and Heuksando depend on the weather, keep some flexibility in the schedule and book early.
  • Google Maps is restricted in Korea: install Naver Map or KakaoMap, and Papago for translation.

Formalities and safety

  • Passport valid beyond the length of the stay. Short tourist stays visa-free for up to 90 days for many nationalities.
  • K-ETA electronic authorisation required in principle, but several countries, France among them, benefit from a temporary exemption that keeps being extended: check your status on k-eta.go.kr before departure.
  • Pack mountain clothing for the two days in the Jirisan.
  • The crossing to Hongdo takes about 2 hours from Mokpo and depends heavily on the weather: book ahead and set aside the whole day.
  • One of the safest countries in the world. Type C/F power sockets, 220 V.

Budget and meals

  • Currency: South Korean won (KRW). Bank cards accepted almost everywhere; a little cash remains useful at the markets.
  • Street food: €3 to €8. Simple restaurant: €8 to €15.
  • Jeolla is the region most famous for its food: Jeonju bibimbap and hanjeongsik meals, the seafood of Yeosu and Mokpo, the tea of Boseong and Hadong.

If a hotel in the itinerary is closed or can no longer be found, or a place to visit has closed permanently, the itinerary is corrected in your customer account within 7 days, or you are refunded in full. A hotel fully booked on your dates, a seasonal closure or a change in opening hours or prices is not covered.
