Expo Science Park and Hanbat Arboretum

The road to Daejeon, Korea's research capital. The park of the 1993 Expo lines the Gapcheon river. The Hanbat Arboretum, one of the largest urban botanical gardens in the country, offers a fine green breathing space in the heart of the city.

Afternoon

Ppuri Park and Jangtaesan forest

Ppuri ("Roots") Park is a theme park devoted to family names and Korean genealogy, with sculptures and gardens. The Jangtaesan recreational forest, planted with tall metasequoias, offers shaded walks and canopy walkways.

Evening

Hanbit Tower and Expo Bridge

In the evening, the illuminated Hanbit tower and Expo Bridge are mirrored in the Gapcheon river, at the edge of the Expo park.

Weather and when to go

Autumn (the foliage of Songnisan and Sobaeksan) and spring (the royal azaleas of Sobaeksan) are the two ideal windows.
Four distinct seasons. Hot, humid summer, with the monsoon in July. Cold, dry winter.

Transport and permits

Chungcheong, rural and mountainous, is ideally covered by car. Cheongju, Daejeon and Chungju are connected by train.
Seoul is easily reached by motorway or by KTX from Daejeon. Songdo is 20-30 minutes from Incheon airport.
Google Maps is restricted in Korea: install Naver Map or KakaoMap, and Papago for translation.

Formalities and safety

Passport valid beyond the length of the stay. Short tourist stays visa-free for up to 90 days for many nationalities.
K-ETA electronic authorisation required in principle, but several countries, France among them, benefit from a temporary exemption that keeps being extended: check your status on k-eta.go.kr before departure.
Pack hiking clothes for Songnisan and Sobaeksan.
Departing from Incheon, arrive early: the airport is vast. Remember the tax refund (airport kiosks) for eligible purchases.

Budget and meals

Currency: South Korean won (KRW). Bank cards accepted almost everywhere; a little cash remains useful at the markets.
Street food: €3 to €8. Simple restaurant: €8 to €15.
To try: the ppang (bread) of Daejeon and its famous Sung Sim Dang bakery, the garlic of Danyang and its garlic dishes, the lotus and river produce of Buyeo and Gongju.

If a hotel in the itinerary is closed or can no longer be found, or a place to visit has closed permanently, the itinerary is corrected in your customer account within 7 days, or you are refunded in full. A hotel fully booked on your dates, a seasonal closure or a change in opening hours or prices is not covered.
