Arrival in Jeju and the volcanic city

Morning

Dragon Head Rock and Samseonghyeol

Flight from the mainland to Jeju (about 1 hr), then discovering Jeju-si. The lava rock of Yongduam, carved by the waves into the shape of a dragon's head bursting from the sea, watches over the shore. The Samseonghyeol site, three cavities from which the island's founding ancestors are said to have emerged, holds its origin myth.

Afternoon

Jeju museums and Loveland

The Jeju Folklore & Natural History Museum presents the volcanic nature of the island and the singular culture of its people, including the famous haenyeo women divers. Jeju Loveland is a sculpture park for adults, unusual and humorous (over-18s only).

Evening

Dongmun market

The large covered market of Jeju-si, lively in the evening, overflows with seafood, Jeju tangerines and local street food to eat on the spot.

Country quick guide and logistics

The essentials of the country, scannable in ten seconds.

Weather and when to go

  • Jeju is windy: pack a windbreaker. Ferries and hikes depend on the weather.
  • Spring and autumn are the best windows; azaleas or snow on Hallasan depending on the season.
  • Four distinct seasons. Hot, humid summer, with the monsoon in July.

Transport and permits

  • A rental car is the best option on Jeju: the sites are scattered all around the island and public transport is limited. International driving permit required.
  • The air link from the mainland is fast and frequent. Cabin baggage is limited on domestic flights: check the allowances.
  • Google Maps is restricted in Korea: install Naver Map or KakaoMap, and Papago for translation.

Formalities and safety

  • Passport valid beyond the length of the stay. Short tourist stays visa-free for up to 90 days for many nationalities.
  • K-ETA electronic authorisation required in principle, but several countries, France among them, benefit from a temporary exemption that keeps being extended: check your status on k-eta.go.kr before departure.
  • The climb to the summit of Hallasan (Baengnokdam) requires a compulsory online reservation, with a daily quota, and a very early start (9 to 10 hours round trip).
  • No compulsory vaccine; up-to-date routine vaccinations recommended (DTP, hepatitis A and B).
  • One of the safest countries in the world. Type C/F power sockets, 220 V.

Budget and meals

  • Currency: South Korean won (KRW). Bank cards accepted almost everywhere; a little cash remains useful at the markets.
  • Street food: €3 to €8. Simple restaurant: €8 to €15.
  • To try: grilled Jeju black pork (heukdwaeji), cutlassfish (galchi), abalone (jeonbok), tangerines and hallabong.

Email contact@etaperia.com within 12 months of your purchase. If a hotel in the itinerary is closed or can no longer be found, or a place to visit has closed permanently, the itinerary is corrected in your customer account within 7 days, or you are refunded in full. A hotel fully booked on your dates, a seasonal closure or a change in opening hours or prices is not covered.
